A brisk evening's discussion on Odisha's investment potential hosted by the Chairman

Hello there! I see you quite excited. What’s up?

Well hello back to you! Haven’t you heard? The Chairman was here in Bhubaneswar! And I got to meet him.

That’s so cool! What happened that day?

The Chairman had organised an evening with the intellectual community of the state to discuss on Odisha as a superpower for having a tremendous investment potential. He also led the discussions on how development could be brought sooner in the state and how industries can play a crucial part in this.

From left to right:
1st row: Shri Debi Prasad Mishra, Shri Anil Agarwal, Shri T.K Chand
2nd row: The esteemed guests, Shri Abhijit Pati, The delegates
That’s such a nice topic for discussion. It concerns all of us. Who all were present?

The Minister of Industries, School & Mass Education - Shri Debi Prasad Mishra was present along with Dr. T.K Chand, the CMD of NALCO. Other dignitaries and bureaucrats of the State were also present. The intellectual community consisting of who’s who from various industries and corporates and institutions were also present like Tata Steel, The Utkal Chamber of Commerce and Industry Limited, CII, Sai International, TCS among others. The gathering also showcased a student representation from premier educational institutes of the state like XIM Bhubaneswar and IMI.

Meeting with the intellectuals of the state
That’s quite a healthy diversity. The conversations would have gone quite well.

Yes! The Hon’ble Minister said that recent times have seen the establishment of many projects in Odisha with the government’s facilitation programs like strengthening the ‘ease of doing business’ in the state, holding investor meets across the country etc. With the presence of large scale industries in the state at strategic locations, Odisha is poised to be at the center of the ‘Make In India’ campaign.

Dr. T.K Chand put in a short address thanking the Chairman about investing 52000 crores in Odisha which led to the creation of employment of people in one of the poorest regions of the country. He also appreciated the fact that together, the social responsibilities of the industries can lead a positive change in the development scenario.

The Chairman also had a few words to say before the informal discussions started. In his address, he said that it was time Kalahandi’s people saw real development which aimed at eradicating poverty and creating viable livelihood sources. He thanked the Hon’ble CM for recognizing the fact that this process needed expediting and industrialization of the region was going to go a long way in achieving this.

That’s an interesting point. I was reading about the recent incidents in Kalahandi which took the entire nation by storm. I agree that people deserve better.

With the government’s active interest and support, we will better things there. The Chairman committed to the development of the region by declaring an investment of 1000 crores for a medical college in Kalahandi.

But what about the discussions on Odisha’s investment scenario?

The conversations gathered momentum with Aluminum taking the spotlight initially. The Chairman opined that it is India who is best suited to manufacture and market Aluminium, not China. China doesn’t have indigenous bauxite but their industry is heavily subsidized for manufacturing aluminium. But India, especially Odisha has a genuine potential of becoming a leader in Aluminium manufacturing and value addition because of the availability of the resources. This was supported by Dr. TK Chand and discussed with the Hon’ble Minister. It gradually moved on in favor of setting up SMEs in the state which would open the gates of entrepreneurship and technological advancement.

But there was one thing the Chairman laid stout emphasis on – responsible mining through cutting edge technology. He said, “I want to leave the earth better than when I got it”. His vision for creating a world-class university in Odisha to make it the educational hub of India was also appreciated by the gathering.

The student community took advantage of the forum in interacting with the illustrious delegates and had conversations on how Odisha can be made an industrial superpower. The Make in India will enable the country to diminish import dependency and shed the identity of a buyer’s market.

Students from IMI and XIM, Bhubaneswar
Seems like a successful event. I hope you enjoyed the evening?

Seeing so many pioneers and who’s who of the State at one place made my evening a special one! Plus the conversations were amazing. I wish you could have attended it.

Aluminium in guitars – It's all music to our ears

Think of a guitar and the classic wooden version comes to mind. There are hundreds of types and they come in all shapes and sizes. Some passionate players even go for custom made guitars just to suit their movements and taste. The simple guitar is still evolving with newer uses of the instruments in concerts and other forms of music. The use of wood in the body and the neck of a guitar is not going to cease in a long time. However, the use of other selected materials by modern guitar manufacturers has significantly improved the sound quality and handling of the guitars. “Manufacturers were making custom guitars from solid billeted aluminum. I was still in graduate school and couldn’t afford such instruments. So I decided to make a competitively priced guitar. Instead of wood or plastic, I opted to use 0.080-in. aircraft-grade aluminum sheet metal because of its quality and durability,” says the then-future CEO of Normandy Guitars. Aluminium extrusions - The ultimate value addition of Aluminium downstream

From simple paper clips to complex pieces used in advanced technology, aluminium extrusions are created in various shapes and sizes for value added end use utilizations. The computer you are using right now contains at least one aluminium profile in the form of a heat sink. This takes advantage of aluminium’s excellent thermal conductivity, unique anodising capability and freedom of design to keep your computer’s processor cool. Different cross sections of extrusions Extrusion is a process used to create objects of a fixed cross-sectional profile. A special tool called a ‘die’ is used to create these extrusions by cutting or shaping the material with the help of a press. These dies are customized to create the wanted design. The process involves the pressing of a pre-heated solid cylinder of aluminium (billet) which is forced through the die opening. The billets are heated to a temperature range of 350 – 500 degrees Celsius. Aluminium does not glow when heated ye...

The choice is clear - Aluminium body for high end smartphones

A lot of phone companies are trying to build slim and sturdy phones for the ever growing market of steroid enhanced hardware capabilities. With phone manufacturers stuffing more RAM and precision cameras in the modern phones, the weight and robustness of the frames becomes all the more important. Today, some manufactures prefer a fiber body to reduce the overall weight in comparison to metal bodies. However, there’s something which still draws a larger advocacy of using aluminium bodies instead of a plastic or fiber. In 2007, Apple CEO Steve Jobs penned an open letter highlighting changes to the company's environmental policy in hopes of achieving "a greener Apple." In the letter, Jobs specifically noted the Mac maker's adoption of aircraft-grade aluminum in order to improve recycling uptake. Apart from the cost reduction implications, Apple is strongly in favor of aluminium usage in all its products for improving its year on year recycling capabilities with...

Aluminium vs. Steel - (1) The changing tides in the automotive sector

To Steel or not to Steel… That is the question. To Aluminium… This might be the answer. The automobile industry is the one constantly shifting tides in technology and design to achieve perfection and quality. Everything is done with precision to maximise the output from the machines with as few resources as possible. After all, this is necessary as natural resources are limited and so are the resources which people can spare for an economical, ergonomic and environment-friendly vehicle of personal transportation. Moreover, safety is an important issue that the engineers keep at priority as people’s lives are at stake. Aluminium body is the preferred material in sports cars With car manufacturers around the world trying to pack in more punch with their offerings, the fight for better fuel efficiency and safety of the automobiles has intensified. With cutting edge designing and engineering capabilities, car manufacturers have carefully selected the materials and technolog...

Conversations in KUI - An initiative to reach out to the people in Niyamgiri

There’s no communication in the society without a common, bankable and agreed upon language. Kui is such a beautiful South-Central-Dravidian language spoken by the Kondh tribes in the western parts of Odisha. It was also known as the Kalinga language during the historical times. These tribes are native of the hills in Koraput and Kalahandi district. For several years even after independence, the region has been grappling with abject poverty and neglect. Although much has been said about the infamy of this region in media, it has been conveniently been forgotten in the time that has gone by. It is excruciatingly tough for a person who is not from these parts of the country to fathom how a woman could sell her 12-year-old sister-in-law, to a blind man for Rs. 40 and a sari to feed her family. It is a region which has seen the worst imaginable droughts, unabashed child selling, malnutrition and rampant starvation deaths that the social workers started referring it as ' Kalaha...
